The Little Flower Recipe Book

REVIEW BY SHARON NEWEY

By Jill Rizzo, Artisan/ Bookreps NZ, $69.99

Why are we fascinated by anything tiny or miniature – doll houses, puppies, bonsai and model boats and cars? This book celebrates petite flower arrangements – not those that will command a room but those that charm and delight. They’re also a way of slowing down and focusing on the flowers’ delicate intricacies and fleeting beauty – it’s mindfulness meets flower arranging. Some are mini, some even micro, held in vessels such as thimble-sized vases and teensy teacups, but there are also little wreaths, pomanders, garlands, tablescapes and wall hangings. The idea is wonderfully practical in terms of access to the “ingredients”; there’s no need for lots of expensive blooms – you could pluck daisies from the lawn, pussy willow from the beach, and foliage and herbs from your garden. It’s also less daunting for beginners – if you get it wrong, it’s easy to start again with little wastage. While this is a book from the UK, the concept is perfect for going off-script and using many of our small-flowered, often-overlooked natives. Get ready to be inspired, and ooh and aah over these quirky little gems.
